NED Nasal Swab Educator

Quick Start Guide

Thank you for purchasing the NED Nasal Swab Educator device and training platform! Below is a list of resources to help you get the most value out of your simulator.

Here you will find educational videos that provide step-by-step instructions on performing nasopharyngeal swab tests, best practices, and some techniques to avoid.

  • Inside the case, you will find an instruction manual to assemble the NED Nasal Swab Educator. Follow the instructions and if you require assistance please contact your sales representative to book an onboarding appointment.

Web Camera Setup

  1. Ensure NED is fully assembled and you have removed the web camera lens cap

  2. Plug in the USB web camera to the computer. The software drivers should automatically begin installing.

  3. Next, in the bottom left part of the dock, you’ll see the Windows search bar, type ‘Camera’ and open the default Camera application.

  4. Once the application is open, in the top right corner, click the gear icon and select ‘USB Camera 2.0’ (this should switch the video to the NED camera)

  5. Directly above the white button, press the video camera button to switch from photo to video mode.

  6. Press the red record button to start a recording.

Recommended Equipment

  • Computer (with Windows 10 OS or MacOS Catalina) with a standard USB port

  • Nasopharyngeal swabs (ensure they are actual NP swabs as other swabs may not fit into the device)

  • Flat surface to attach the device to (ensure it is a smooth surface for the suction cups)

Training Protocol for Staff

The ideal methodology for training staff is to:

  1. Allow a staff member to record themselves performing a nasal swab on NED

  2. The staff member then rewatches the recorded attempt to see their technique

  3. Watch the educational training videos provided by AHead Simulations

  4. Then, record a second swab attempt after they’ve reviewed the gold standard procedure from the videos.
